Chipper Solenoid

Chipper Solenoid 20-21

The figure on the right shows the chipper solenoid (in grey) along with its pulling mechanism (in black) and the chipper itself (in red). The chipper solenoid is attached to the middle plate with a tie wrap and the chipper is connected to the front assembly with two screws, one in each chipper arm.

The chipper solenoid has a coil made out of a copper wire, the coil is in the shape of a helix in order to generate a controlled magnetic field. Inside this coil, a cylindrical bar of steel called plunger can move, and this plunger is connected to a spring to be able to move back to its original position. This solenoid works by having a current flowing through the coil which creates a nearly uniform magnetic field inside of it and this magnetic field makes the plunger move. For the chipper solenoid, the pulling mechanism is screwed to the plunger, so when the plunger moves, the pulling mechanism does too and pulls the top of the chipper back, which makes the chipper plate go up to chip the ball.
