This section outlines the proposed gripper concepts, discussing their advantages and disadvantages, and explains the rationale behind the final design choice. Four concepts were made for the gripper based on research.
Concept 1
Concept 1 is a box-shaped container for probes and rocks. The container is split into two compartments. The box lid is connected to a hinge and is opened and closed by a servo motor. The lid is locked in the closed position by a leaf spring-shaped latch. The latch is moved to unlock the lid through electromagnetic actuation. The box is sealed with a rubber seal between the container and the lid.
Concept 2
Concept 2 differs from Concept 1 through the difference in lid shape and mechanism. This concept uses roller blinds as a lid actuated by a DC motor. The roller blinds slide into slots at the top of the container, ensuring proper sealing. The rolled blinds are supported by a triangular structure on the back of the container. As with Concept 1, the container is split into two compartments.
